Social Media Policy for Volunteers
Introduction
The Vision Volunteers use social media to acknowledge the global community for the services
we provide as an organization to the recipient community.
We understand the importance of social media as a communication tool for reaching our goals
and generating wonderful volunteer dialogues.
Defining social Media
Social media is any tool or service that enables conversations over the internet. Social
media applies not only to traditional big names, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram,
but also applies to other platforms that include user conversations including digital platforms
such as YouTube, Flickr, blogs online forums and wikis.
Purpose
The aim of the policy is to establish expectations for volunteers when it comes to using social
media for volunteer projects. It's important to realize that social media is never completely private.
Also, since we are part of a community of like-minded people who share a same passion and who
deserve each other's respect and support, this policy will enable the volunteers to conduct
successful projects.
This policy is therefore essential, and it is backed up by our Member Code of Conduct.
We approach social media with the belief that the community with which we want to interact is
trustworthy. We will strive to take action if one of our viewers submits unlawful, offensive, or
defamatory information.
Policy:
-
The Vison Volunteers realizes that it is practicable for volunteers and members to communicate
successfully using a range of social media platforms, and we do not want to restrict this.
However, because we are unable to monitor them, if you create a group (for example, on
Facebook), you will be responsible for the activities within that group. The Vison Volunteers is
happy for its approved logo to be used on one group and/or page for each Chapter, Region, or
Group (and regional sub-group), as long as the group owners:
-
Guarantee that the Vison Volunteers is presented in a positive, professional manner.
-
Ensure that users of the group follow the code of conduct mentioned below
-
Monitor that group with the help of the Volunteering Manager.
Please be aware that the Vison Volunteers must reserve the right to end its affiliation with a
group as well as the usage of any of our trademarks or other assets. When creating a group or
account in Vison Volunteers' name, the account must be recognized as Vison Volunteers' property.
This implies that if you leave your role with Vison Volunteers, you won't be able to claim ownership
of the contacts and connections you've made through the account, and you'll have to hand it over to another active Member.
Principles of Behavior in Social Media
We have five social media principles that underpin expectations of all users of social media:
-
Be nice, have fun, and connect
-
-
Follow the law, follow the code of conduct
-
-
We advise that you post these principles, however briefly, in a prominent place where users will see them.
-
Be nice, have fun, and connect
-
On behalf of the Vision Volunteers, social media is a space to hold dialogues about
volunteerism and form connections. If you remember to conduct conversations rather than
promote agendas on social media, the connections you make will be much more gratifying.
Users should avoid sending communications that could be objectionable or misinterpreted in a
way that harms our reputation, even if it is only indirectly. Users should keep in mind that
anything they write may be read by the general public, Vision Volunteers coworkers, volunteers,
employers, and social contacts for an extended period of time.
-
Protect information
Information sharing is encouraged on social media. Users may have access to sensitive or
confidential information about the organization, its employees, members, or volunteers that should
not be made public. Personal information, whether confidential or not, should not be shared.
-
Follow the law, follow the code of conduct
-
Social media allows for rapid communication, with messages going viral in seconds. This
makes it difficult to correct an incorrect message once it has been sent. The best course of
action is to double-check all content for accuracy and to ensure that it complies with the Vision
Volunteers Code of Conduct, as well as any limits imposed by local legislation and the platform
in use.
-
-
Please notify the Volunteering Manager if you notice something inappropriately shared about
Vision Volunteers on a social media platform. Also, keep in mind that whatever you share on
social media has the potential to go viral. Legal conclusions, other people's intellectual property,
and libelous or unpleasant words should all be avoided at all costs. The poster is responsible
for everything that is placed online. Avoid discussing sensitive Vision Volunteers subjects in your comments. Even if it is obvious that the ideas expressed do not reflect those of the Vision
Volunteers, comments may harm our image.
-
Use common sense
Common sense is required when using social media. It's a decent rule of thumb to post if you'd feel
comfortable saying what you're posting to a large group of people.
Taking Action if you feel the Principles have Been Breached
You may be concerned that your social media conduct violates the group's standards, harms
others, or undermines the Vision Volunteers' mission. If you believe this is the case, the following
suggestions may be useful.
What You Can Do
If you sense a conversation's tone or language is getting out of hand, avoid engaging further, as
this can often make things worse.
What You Can Do
If you are the owner of a group, you must take action by reminding others of the group's goal,
conduct guidelines, or the Vision Volunteers Code of Conduct for Members, or by moderating
further.
If you are still concerned, you may contact the Volunteering Manager at the Vision Volunteers
office.
What the Vision Volunteers will do
If Vision Volunteers receives notification of a problem, we will contact the Project Coordinator
or Global Volunteer Coordinator and request that they attempt to resolve the problem. If the
situation is serious or persists, the Vision Volunteers may:
